A boatswain’s call pipe or bosun’s whistle is a pipe or a non-diaphragm type whistle used on naval ships by a boatswain. It is pronounced and sometimes spelled “bosun’s call”.
The pipe consists of a narrow tube (the gun) which directs air over a metal sphere (the buoy) with a hole in the top. The player opens and closes the hand over the hole to change the pitch. The rest of the pipe consists of a “keel”, a flat piece of metal beneath the gun that holds the call together, and the “shackle”, a key ring that connects a long silver or brass chain that sits around the collar when in ceremonial uniform.
If you’re ever stuck for gift ideas, Vintage World Australia is one of the best starting points you’ll find online. From our decorative Diver’s Helmets and our fully functional table clocks right through to items of a slightly more personal nature like our key chains.
The maritime themed treasures represent the elegantly simple technologies of old days, when people didn’t have digital assistants to open their front doors as they approached, or lock their valuables behind hidden, sliding doors. The Pirates and sea- trading sailors had keys – old fashioned, jangling, iron keys on big key rings that fit the locks that protected the chests of pillaged, stolen or traded treasures. Vintage World Australia’s key chains have a little more glitz and glamour than a gaoler’s big iron ring of keys. Each is a solid metal alloy with a brass, copper or gold finish and uses a ‘screw open’ style ring to keep one’s keys from their common and frustrating habit of disappearing into that same hidden place where “X” marks the spot but, for some reason, is rarely where we left it.
Uncommon, Unique and Priceless gift for Father’s Day, Mother’s Day and Christmas.
